Meet us at the Drive-In for An Evening of Social Justice

2020 has been a YEAR. Starting with the COVID-19 pandemic which still has us social distancing. #wearamask. George Floyd’s murder reignited the Black Lives Matter movement calling for social justice and police reform. Then the California wildfires wreaked havoc on our beautiful land and polluted our air to unseen levels. And so we’ve learned to adapt, fight and continue to do the work, even if that means thinking outside of the box.

With the critical Black Lives Matter movement on all of our minds, we worked with Regan Baker and her team to find a way to highlight, honor and celebrate remarkable Black Creatives who have long been underrepresented. We partnered with San Francisco Black Film Festival (SFBFF), the Oakland International Film Festival and LMNOP Design + Build teams to bring An Evening of Social Justice to the public, a drive-in movie fundraiser supporting Black creatives.  The evening will include the feature film 42 (the Jackie Robinson story featuring the late Chadwick Boseman), along with two short films that impart social justice and highlight Black female artists. The event will be at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture which is currently presenting Fort Mason Flix, a Covid-safe drive-in movie theater right on the Bay.

Working closely with the San Francisco Black Film Festival, the evening is an homage to SFBFF late founder, Kali O’Ray. Like his publicist and friend, Jackie Wright said, “Kali was at the heart of Black filmmaking in San Francisco.”

So yes, it’s been a YEAR. And the year is not over (VOTE!), and the fight for justice and equality continues. We’ve navigated this year with creativity, patience, resilience and determination in hand. An Evening for Social Justice is a culmination of what the year has brought us, and how we’ve approached the obstacles. Along with that, it’s an example of how much we value collaboration with local businesses and nonprofits, and how important it is to always celebrate and highlight those that don’t often get a platform or voice. The timeline has been short from inception to execution and we are so thankful to all of our partners for their encouragement, time and support. See you at the Drive-In!

Marie Alexander’s work perfectly complements the Mediterranean kitchen designed by Regan Baker Design for this year’s San Francisco Decorator Showcase. She along with Tawny Chatmon, Lauren Pearce and Christa David (all chosen for the kitchen, as well) will be featured in the short film, Perspective.
